The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association purpose is the protection, restoration, preservation, and interpretation of lighthouses and their role in Michigan's maritime history. The organization has nine board members, two part-time staff (a director and assistant) and a paid student in the summer who assists with the business operations of the Big Sable Point gift shop. The Association is a tax-exempt (501-c3) corporation and is supported thru gift shop sales, memberships, tower tours and donations. In 2007, the Association updated its name to Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. This change reflects obtaining the lease for Little Sable Point Lighthouse tower, and its subsequent restoration in 2005 and the agreement with the City of Ludington in 2007 to restore and maintain the North Pier Head Light and make it available for visitors. |
