Association Mission, Purpose, and Structure The Association's mission is to promote public awareness of light stations as important educational, historical and ecological sites.

The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association purpose is the protection, restoration, preservation, and interpretation of lighthouses and their role in Michigan's maritime history.

The organization has nine board members, two part-time staff (a director and assistant) and a paid student in the summer who assists with the business operations of the Big Sable Point gift shop.

The Association is a tax-exempt (501-c3) corporation and is supported thru gift shop sales, memberships, tower tours and donations.

Association History The organization was formed in 1986 as the Big Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association to reflect its purpose of saving the 1867 Big Sable Point lighthouse and tower from the encroaching Lake Michigan, restoring the house and tower to it's original (1960's) appearance, and opening it to the public.

In 2007, the Association updated its name to Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association. This change reflects obtaining the lease for Little Sable Point Lighthouse tower, and its subsequent restoration in 2005 and the agreement with the City of Ludington in 2007 to restore and maintain the North Pier Head Light and make it available for visitors.

Volunteers, Association Membership, and Donations Association membership is open to all who desire to help in the restoration and operation of the lighthouses. Volunteers maintain and interpret the lighthouses (one to two weeks) and lodging is provided. Applications are available for those interested in having this "unique" experience at a historic lighthouse. Financial contributions to support the work of the organization are gratefully accepted.
